In what ways does a postpartum doula provide support?
The postpartum period is beginning to be recognized as so important, it is sometimes referred to as the 4th stage of labor. In times past and in many cultures today, women in the community came along side the new mother providing help during postpartum recuperation and transition with new baby. They fulfil very practical needs as well as emotional needs.
I especially have a soft spot for the needs of postpartum mothers. As a mother who had a very sick infant, it took a toll on my health. Adrenal fatigue has become common in childbearing women. Taking good care of mothers helps mothers bond with their baby, reduces the incidence of postpartum blues and depression, and also contributes to the long-term health of mothers.
Today, with lifestyles in the United States, many women do not have community close by to provide the postpartum care needed to support long-term health and well-being. It is our privilege to help fulfill this vital role in the lives of new mothers and their families.
